British Prime Minister Theresa May spoke at a press conference earlier this week before she met with French President Emmanuel Macron during her first trip abroad since the 2017 British general election. At the press conference, May revealed that Britain and France plan to join forces in order to crack down on social media giants that fail to remove content that encourages terrorism and violence from their platforms.
May said that she intends to work with Macron and the social media and technology companies to automatically remove content deemed by London and Paris as “extremist.” Britain has suffered deadly terrorist attacks in the past few months, the most recent being the London Bridge car-ramming and stabbing attack.
Following the attack, which claimed the lives of eight people, May said: “We cannot allow this ideology the safe space it needs to breed – yet that is precisely what the Internet and the big companies that provide Internet-based services provide.”
