The Beersheba District Court on Sunday handed down a life sentence to Bilal Shaker for the murder of Rinat Roas from Ashdod, which he committed 12 years ago. The conviction was made possible now thanks to a DNA test.
Shaker, 33, from the village of Bu’eine Nujeidat in northern Israel, was convicted of murder, rape and sodomy. In addition to the life sentence, he was ordered to pay NIS 258,000 in compensation to the victim’s family.

“The convict murdered Rinat Roas after sexually abusing, raping and committing sodomy on her,” the justices wrote in their ruling. “These heinous acts continue to haunt Rinat’s family to this day.”
In 2005, 20-year-old Roas’ body was found days after she did not return home from work.
