Two weeks after announcing his retirement, Deri returns: Aryeh Deri, Chairman of the Sephardic religious party Shas, announced this morning (Monday) that he is returning to lead the party, after having resigned from the Knesset and from his leading role in the party following the release of recordings of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef revealed on Channel 2.
Deri arrived today at the party’s offices for the first time since rattling Shas by announcing his resignation. He assembled the party’s members of Knesset and later the elections campaign team, and informed them of his return.
“I accept submissively and with a bowed head the order of the Council of Torah Sages”, said Deri. “Following a difficult period during which I underwent personal and familial examination and weighed all considerations, I have decided that Shas, the movement of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, and its hundreds of thousands of voters, are more important than any other consideration. With my head held high, I will proudly and decisively continue to lead the movement, in order to continue the great enterprises of Maran [Yosef], and to speak on behalf of those that the state has left behind”.

The dramatic recordings of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef shook the Shas party
Deri’s request to resign from his position as head of Shas was passed on to the Council of Torah Sages, after recordings of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef attacking Deri and supporting Eli Yishay were revealed on Channel 2 News. The council members decided to reject Deri’s request, and went to his home in order to reconcile him.
“The Council of Torah Sages firmly rejects the Chairman’s request to resign from his position and determines that he is fulfilling his role courageously and loyally”, said the Rabbis. “We are full of appreciation for his management of the movement and demand he continue his role. The council is returning the letters to the party Chairman and cancelling his resignation”.

“We have gathered to weep and protest the honor of the Torah and Maran [Yosef] which were trampled publically”, added the Rabbis. They emphasized that they support Deri, “Who lends his soul to the continuation of holly enterprises. We call on all not to be dragged into disagreements and into the debasement of religious scholars”.
