In an interview with CNN news yesterday (Tuesday), Chairman of the Hamas Political Bureau Khaled Mashal asked the Trump administration to take advantage of Hamas’ policy change.

According to Mashal, Hamas agreed for the first time to the establishment of a Palestinian state with the 1967 borders. “I am saying now that the charter is enough,” he stated. “World capitals should seize the opportunity and engage seriously with Hamas, the Palestinians, the Arabs and exercise pressure on the intransigent party, which is Israel.”

In the new charter, which was published several days ago, Hamas disallows the clause calling for the destruction of Israel. In addition, the charter severs the organization’s ties to Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood. Hamas hopes that by changing its policy toward the group, the West will stop considering it a terrorist organization.

The Israeli Prime Minister’s Office stated in response: “We see that Hamas continues to invest all its resources not only in preparations for war against Israel, but also in educating the children of Gaza to annihilate Israel. The day Hamas stops digging tunnels, diverts its resources to civilian infrastructure and stops educating the killing of Israelis will be a real change. This did not happen.”
