Palestinian sources told Israel’s Hadashot news that a group of high-level Egyptian officials visited Gaza just over a week ago, ostensibly to reconcile the vying Palestinian factions, Hamas and Fatah. With regards to Israel, the Egyptians told the Hamas leadership: “Don’t play with fire.”

According to the sources, the Egyptians also warned: “If there will be an escalation in the Gaza Strip, the blow Israel is bound to deal Gaza will be forceful and may even topple the Hamas regime. No person in Hamas’ leadership is immune.”

It is unknown at this time whether the message was an Israeli or Egyptian initiative. The tensions along the Gazan-Israeli border escalated last month after an IED exploded along the border, injuring four Israeli soldiers.
