Amid rising tensions between the US and Europe over President Trump’s threats to sanction EU companies doing business with Iran, European Council President Donald Tusk tweeted on Wednesday, “With friends like that, who needs enemies.”
“But frankly, EU should be grateful,” Tusk added. “Thanks to (Trump) we got rid of all illusions. We realize that if you need a helping hand, you will find one at the end of your arm.”
Speaking at an EU summit in Bulgaria on Wednesday, Tusk said Washington can no longer be trusted and therefore Europe will have to protect its companies from US sanctions. “We are witnessing today a new phenomenon – the capricious assertiveness of the American administration,” he said.
