Hundreds of friends and family members came today (Monday) to Kfar Vitkin to pay their respects to Omri and Ilai Nir, who fell off a cliff during a hiking trip in southern Israel last Friday.
Shiri Nir, Omri’s wife and Ilai’s mother, said the Kaddish mourning prayer and afterward thanked the medical team that “fought tooth and nail and was the light in a dark hell.”

“The media talked about Omri and Ilai’s last ten seconds alive but Omri was always a hero,” said Udi Segal, a family friend. “The willingness to save another was always there. Even if this was incident would have involved a different child, Omri would’ve acted in the same way.”
As reported by JOL, earlier today Ilai’s organs were donated to three people.

Yesterday evening, Omri’s friends gathered in the center of Kfar Vitkin where the family lives. Ziv, a family friend who was with the two during the tragedy, said that they usually hike in the Carmel region but this time chose the desert.
According to Ziv, the other hikers responded quickly during the tragedy to try to save the two: “At that moment, each parent acted based on his instinct, the first ones ran towards Omri and Ilai, the others protected the children and prevented them from getting closer. Other parents ran to call for help. This was just unfortunate.”
