West Bank Checkpoint

Today the Israel Defense Forces (IDF)has closed all of the crossings into Israel from the West Bank and Gaza due to national elections. This is a routine safety procedure employed by the government during all Jewish holidays and Israeli national celebrations.

The closure will affect tens of thousands of Palestinians who work daily and legally in Israel, most of them on construction sites and maintenance work.

Israeli citizens will be allowed to move between the West Bank and Israel.

The closure began last night and will continue until midnight tonight.

There will be exceptions for humanitarian cases such the transfer of Palestinian patients to Israeli hospitals. In order to do so, permission is required from a branch of the Ministry of Defense called the Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT).

Election day in Israel is a paid holiday for employees. The majority of the polls will be open from 7:00 am until 10:00 pm.
