Hundreds of neo-Nazis attended a festival on Saturday to mark the birthday of Adolf Hitler in the small eastern German town of Ostritz. Local residents held a counter-protest.

The Schild und Schwert (Shield and Sword, or SS for short) festival was held under heavy police presence. Officers were equipped with a water cannon and other riot control measures to prevent violence. Visitors were prohibited from drinking alcohol.

One of the protesters against the event said, “We’re not going to just stand idly by as neo-Nazis from Germany and other countries are coming to celebrate Hitler’s birthday. We vow to stand together and oppose them.”
