American actor Jesse Williams, one of the stars of the popular television show Grey’s Anatomy, has joined other high-profile artists in calling on Israel to release Ahed Tamimi, a 16-year-old Palestinian girl arrested for assaulting an IDF soldier.
More than two dozen well-known actors, musicians and athletes have signed a petition to free Tamimi, started by a US group called Dream Defenders.
Tamimi was arrested by Israeli authorities after slapping an IDF soldier who was deployed near her house in the West Bank village of Nabi Salih. The video of her confrontation with the soldier has become viral on social media.
“In the US, we know all too well what it’s like to be oppressed simply because you exist, because you refuse to give up your fight for freedom,” the petition reads. “Too many of our children quickly learn that they may be imprisoned or killed simply for who they are.”
