Guests that arrived at the “Romantik Seehotel Jaegerwirt” hotel in Austria never could’ve imagined how their vacation would end. Hundreds of guests that attempted to leave their room found out that they were locked inside and that they were actually being held hostage.

It turned out that hackers took control of the hotel’s computer system and successfully locked the guest’s rooms from inside and outside. They demanded from the hotel pay them 1500 euros by bitcoin currency. The hotel management eventually gave in to their demands and paid them, after which the rooms were opened.

The hotel uses advanced technology for their doors so only electronic sim cards can open the door, so there wasn’t any option to open the door with a regular key. The hackers encoded a code that opens and closes the doors on their command so the hotel management was left helpless.
