Less than a day after the footage of Haredi men burning effigies of IDF soldiers surfaced, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded, saying that he expects every public figure to condemn this act. “This act was repulsive,” he added.

On Saturday evening, Haredi men set fire to effigies of IDF soldiers during a Lag B’Omer bonfire in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Mea Shearim. The footage of the incident sparked waves of criticism within the Israeli political system.

“Yesterday, a repulsive incident occurred in Jerusalem,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said. “An extremist, albeit marginal, faction of the ultra-Orthodox society, a group which identifies with Neturei Karta, burned dolls dressed up as IDF soldiers wearing the military uniform and Israeli flags in order to harm Haredi soldiers. This act was repulsive and I expect, ask and demand that all public leaders denounce this disgusting act. I’m asking the Israel Police to find those responsible for it.”

Yesh Atid Chairman Yair Lapid also condemned the actions of the Mea Shearim residents, saying that IDF soldiers should not be abandoned and that there needs to be an investigation.

Last night, dozens of ultra-Orthodox Jews, including children, waved dolls dressed up as IDF soldiers and threw them into the bonfire as the crowd cheered. For the past few months, ultra-Orthodox Jews throughout Israel have been protesting against the IDF draft and showing their support for draft dodgers.
