The Israeli aid delegation in Mexico is working around the clock to rescue people who have been trapped underneath rubble for days. In an exclusive interview with Channel 2 News, the head of the delegation Colonel (res.) Dudi Mizrahi talked about the complicated and challenging rescue efforts.

“We are already in the third straight day of work,” he said. “We feel good and are very determined and to tell the truth, we are working very hard.” According to Mizrahi, the fact that the Israeli team was the first to land in Mexico after the earthquake did not go unnoticed by the local media: “It surprised us and even embarrassed us. [We received] a very warm and welcoming reception. Eyes are watching us going through the [recuse] site and pulling people from it.”

He also talked about the aftershock that hit yesterday, “Since we’ve arrived, there have been a few aftershocks. The two main ones happened in the past few hours but we didn’t really feel them. We left the site for a few minutes, reorganized and went back to work. We want to succeed in rescuing all of those trapped over the next few days.”

“We are pretty used to it and it’s okay,” he said when asked about how the families of the delegation members reacted when they were told that they would not be home for Rosh Hashanah. “For such an important and critical task, we will even miss the holiday meal.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke with Israel’s Ambassador to Mexico Yoni Peled and Mizrahi on Saturday evening. “What you are doing is a mitzvah,” Netanyahu told them, according to the Prime Minister’s Office. “It is important from a humanitarian standpoint and also to show the world the true Israel. You are making the State of Israel very proud. Be blessed and return home safely!”
