Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the resignation of his Lebanese counterpart is “a wake-up call” to act against Iranian aggression.
Iran, Netanyahu said, is a danger “not only to Israel, but to the entire Middle East.” He urged the international community to “unite and confront this aggression.”
Hours after Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri’s resignation announcement on Saturday, an Iranian official claimed the move had been initiated by the US and Saudi Arabia.
“This is an unwise act that is not a good sign for Lebanon,” said Hussein Sheikh al-Islam, an advisor to Iran’s Foreign Minister.
Hariri stated in a televised speech that he senses a conspiracy to assassinate him, adding that the current climate in Lebanon is similar to that which preceded the assassination of his father, former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.
Hariri slammed Iran’s “grip” on the country and said Iran “and its affiliates” in the region, i.e. Hezbollah, will “not prevail.”
“Hezbollah has been able in the past decades to impose a reality in Lebanon by force of arms directed at the chests of Syrians and Lebanese,” he said.
