After cutting millions of dollars in funding to UNRWA, Trump administration officials are now proposing to cancel Palestinians’ hereditary refugee status, Israel News Company reported on Tuesday.

Under the current policy, UNRWA allows for Palestinians’ refugee status to be passed down from generation to generation, a privilege that is unique to Palestinians. According to the report, the US State Department is considering canceling this policy, a move Israel has been pushing for years.

Senior Israeli officials who were told of the potential move said it would be a “victory for the Israeli stance on the right of return” and a natural next step after US President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
