A day after Israeli President Reuven Rivlin delivered a sharp speech at the Knesset accusing the current leadership of weakening Israel’s democracy, an Israeli woman posted on Twitter that Rivlin “should be under the ground.”
The disturbing tweet, which was deleted shortly after being posted, was reported to the president’s security staff as an apparent threat on Rivlin’s life.
Rivlin on Monday decried what he perceives to be an attempt by politicians to delegitimize Israel’s democratic institutions such as the Supreme Court. “How can a threatened, conforming, toothless Supreme Court be in Israel’s interest?” he asked.
Culture Minister Miri Regev called Rivlin’s speech “the most undemocratic speech ever given by an Israeli president.”
