Yesterday, Israel marked 50 years of Jerusalem’s reunification. But despite the official celebrations throughout the city, senior-level settlers organized another event in the city, to which diplomats were invited. However, one person in attendance surprised many: US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman, whose presence as a US representative at an event of this sort is quite unusual.

Yesterday (Sunday), the day prior to US President Donald Trump’s expected visit to Israel, a celebratory event was organized by Israel’s Channel 7 marking 50 years of Jerusalem’s reunification. Aside from Israeli settlement leaders and Samaria Council Head Yossi Dagan, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee participated in the celebrations along with one other surprising guest: US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman.
Closed to the media, the event was aimed at presenting facts and applying pressure on the US government to move the embassy to Jerusalem as Trump promised during his presidential campaign. Although Friedman did not speak at the even so as to prevent a diplomatic storm, his mere attendance at an event supporting the move of the US Embassy and the reunification of Jerusalem under Jewish sovereignty was an unusual move.

Friedman’s participation at the event as a representative of the US was a one-time occurrence as he was in practice celebrating Jerusalem’s reunification, despite the dismay of the Arabs who do not recognize Israel’s so-called occupation of Jerusalem following the Six Day War. Among those in attendance at the event were MK Michael Oren, Israeli Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Tzipi Hotovely, Israeli Science, Technology and Space Minister Ofir Akunis and Israeli Deputy Minister of Defense Eli Ben-Dahan.
