The US State Department on Thursday asked Israeli diplomats to tone down their responses to President Donald Trump’s speech in which he recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, Reuters reported Thursday.

This request was made over a growing concern in Washington that Trump’s announcement could trigger acts of terror against US citizens in Israel.

“While I recognize that you will publicly welcome this news, I ask that you restrain your official response,” said an official State Department document sent to Israeli diplomats in Israel and Europe.

“We expect there to be resistance to this news in the Middle East and around the world. We are still judging the impact this decision will have on U.S. facilities and personnel overseas,” it added.

A second document said the US was setting up an internal task force to “track worldwide developments” following the announcement.
