The IDF Military Police on Wednesday arrested a soldier who accidentally shot and killed his friend at a base in central Israel. According to the shooter, the incident happened while the two soldiers were practicing pulling their guns in their room.
The tragic incident, which took place on Tuesday, resulted in the death of 20-year-old Shahar Strug, a combat soldier in the elite Duvdevan unit. The shooter told the investigators that Strug was “his best friend” and that he did not know the gun was loaded.
IDF Central Command chief Maj. Gen. Nadav Padan has ordered the establishment of an inquiry committee into the incident.
Thousands attended Strug’s funeral on Wednesday afternoon. “Our world has fallen apart,” said his mother. “I don’t know what a mother is supposed to say when eulogizing her own son.”
