In response to this morning’s (Saturday) spillover rockets launched into Israel from Syria, the IDF targeted and destroyed three Syrian artillery cannons inside Syrian territory. The IDF stated that it “holds the Syrian regime responsible and won’t tolerate any attempt to breach Israeli sovereignty.”

A few hours after a rocket siren was sounded in the Golan Regional Council, the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit confirmed via Twitter that five rocket projectiles had been launched towards the northern Golan Heights in Israel, of which four fell into Israeli territory. In response, the IDF forces targeted three Syrian artillery cannons.

“Whether errant fire or not, any future occurrences will force the IDF to intensify its response,” the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit stated on its official Twitter page. “The IDF holds the Syrian regime responsible & won’t tolerate any attempt to breach Israeli sovereignty or threaten Israeli civilians’ safety.”

Although the Syrian army confirmed the IDF’s attacks on a number of its positions in the Quinetra area, they blamed Israel, claiming that Syrian rebels fired mortar shells into open areas of northern Israel specifically under Israel’s directive in order to provide Israel with the pretext it needs to act in Syria.

As reported earlier by JOL, the rocket siren sounded early this morning in the Golan Heights due to spillover fire resulted in no casualties or damage. Since last Monday’s Israeli air strike on a Syrian anti-aircraft battery, tensions between Israel and Syria have been growing. Just this past Thursday, IDF tanks targeted and attacked two positions of the Syrian army in Syrian territory in response to spillover fire.

“In response to the projectile that hit Israel earlier today, the IDF targeted the sources of fire in the Syrian Golan Heights,” the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit wrote in a statement confirming Syrian reports. “The IDF holds the Syrian regime responsible for any aggression from its territory and won’t tolerate attacks threatening Israeli sovereignty.” According to sources in Syria, a 130-mm cannon from Assad’s army was destroyed during the military response near Quneitra. No injuries had been reported.
