Iranian Foreign Minister Mohamad Javad Zarif has blamed Israel fo the assassination of top nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh.
“Terrorists murdered an eminent Iranian scientist today. This cowardice—with serious indications of Israeli role—shows desperate warmongering of perpetrators,” Zarif tweeted.
Zarif also called on the international community to “end their shameful double standards & condemn this act of state terror.”
Fakhrizadeh, who headed a secret unit within the Iranian military working on nuclear weapons, was killed near Tehran on Friday night when an explosives-laden car detonated near his vehicle, and he was subsequently fired upon by a number of assailants.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu mentioned Fakhrizadeh by name during a televised address in 2018 after Israeli agents smuggled out of Tehran half a ton of documents related to Iran’s nuclear program, including evidence of a covert nuclear weapons program.
During that address, Netanyahu revealed evidence showing that Iran continues to lie about its nuclear program, demonstrating how the 2015 nuclear deal gave Iran a path to a nuclear arsenal.
