Rouhani will be facing a tougher-than-expected competition in the upcoming election, despite being the driving force behind a nuclear deal with world powers which ended years of sanctions.

Iran’s president Hassan Rouhani has registered to run for a second term in next month’s election, AFP reported on Friday.

Rouhani, who is considered politically moderate, has helped pull Iran out of sanctions imposed by the UN and the US, though his critics say he has yet to deliver on many other domestic issues such as the growing unemployment rate.

His toughest competitor is expected to be Ebrahim Raisi, a previously-little-known cleric who registered last week and has since gained wide popularity among Rouhani’s opponents.
