Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said in a statement on Sunday that it has succeeded in curbing the wave of anti-government protests that has been sweeping the country. The IRGC claimed the unrest was instigated by Iran’s foreign enemies.

According to IRGC, it has broken down the anti-regime dissent together with police forces and the Intelligence Ministry. The group pinned the unrest in the country on Israel, the US, the UK, Saudi Arabia and others.

Western nations and Saudi Arabia were routinely blamed by Iran for the unrest in the country during the protests. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov was quoted as saying that “Iran’s claims of external involvement in the anti-government protests are not baseless,” and Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said that US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are encouraging the demonstrators to protest against the regime in Tehran.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has blamed “enemies” for instigating the unrest, which has so far reportedly lead to the death of over 20 people throughout the country. The protests, which began in the city of Mashhad due to a worsening economic situation, have since escalated to the most significant anti-government dissent Iran has experienced since its Green Movement in 2009.

During a Friday meeting of the UN Security Council, UN Nikki Haley said that her country stands behind the Iranian people who are battling against an oppressive regime. “The Iranian regime’s contempt for the rights of its people has been widely documented for many years,” said Haley. “Let there be no doubt whatsoever, the US stands unapologetically with those in Iran who seek freedom for themselves prosperity for their families, and dignity for their nation. We will not be quiet. No dishonest attempt to call the protesters ‘puppets of foreign powers’ will change that.”
