A journalist from the daily Bild asked a series of questions to Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif during his joint press conference with German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas.
One of Ronzheimer’s questions concerned the homosexual policies of the Iranian regime, “Why are homosexuals executed in Iran because of their sexual orientation?”
The Iranian Foreign Minister replied that “our society has moral principles, and according to these principles we live”.
These are moral principles regarding the behavior of people in general. And that’s because the law is upheld and you abide by laws,” added Zarif
Many hundreds of people have been murdered in Iran for their sexual orientation. In late January of this year, a homosexual was hanged in Iran for his sexual orientation after the Iranian courts determined that he had violated the country’s “anti-gay” laws.
According to the most recent report from the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA), out of the 70 UN member states that criminalize same-sex sexual acts six of them impose the death penalty. These six are Iran, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Sudan, and Somalia.
The US ambassador to Germany, Richard Grenell, harshly criticized Iran for its archaic positions, “The Iranian regime has violated basic principles of the United Nations. UN members should honor the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights if they want to be members at all.
The criminalization of homosexuality plainly violates this declaration,” Grenell said
