Iranian President Hassan Rouhani landed in Russia this afternoon (Monday) after being invited to Moscow by his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. The news of his visit was announced by the Kremlin last week.
Rouhani’s plane landed at Moscow’s Vnukovo International Airport. The Iranian leader and his delegation were greeted by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Vasily Nebenzya. Rouhani’s meeting with Putin is scheduled for tomorrow but the Iranian president will meet with Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev today.
Rouhani and Putin are expected to discuss various topics including the war in Syria. Before he departed from Tehran this morning, Rouhani told reporters that he hopes that the cooperation between Iran and Russia in the energy sector will expand.
Tomorrow’s meeting between Rouhani and Putin will the ninth meeting between the two leaders in less than four years. Rouhani’s trip to Russia is expected to be his last visit abroad before the 2017 Iranian presidential election in May. Earlier this month, Rouhani officially announced that he is running for re-election.
