Over the past few days, especially since US President Donald Trump’s declaration regarding the recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, rocket fire from Gaza has worsened. An assessment is growing within the Israeli security establishment that Palestinian terrorist organizations will attempt to further escalate this rocket fire during US Vice President Mike Pence’s scheduled visit to Israel this week. Israel is also warning that its response to the violence will dramatically increase following Pence’s visit.

The Israeli security establishment is preparing for the anticipated escalation in violence ahead of Pence’s visit on Wednesday. The understanding is that Israel cannot accept the situation of continued rocket fire from Gaza and it is possible that at some point, the decision will be made to increase the retaliations. Israel does not want to reach the point of war or any other scuffles and is therefore attempting to calm the area without getting caught up in fighting in Gaza.

The IDF is currently maintaining its relatively moderate response level, although Hamas does not consider destroying dozens of targets as a moderate response.
