The Israeli Ministry of Defense continues construction on a security barrier along the Israeli-Jordanian border: A NIS 300 million fence designed to protect the planes that will be taking off and landing at the new airport being built. The new airport, located near Timna in southern Israel, will be named after Ilan and Assaf Ramon and is expected to be completed in the coming months.

The physical barrier will also include a unique defense mechanism designed especially for the new airport- a huge 30-meter high fence. The fence, which sits on dozens of tall pillars, was designed to protect on-site aircraft against various threats. The barrier is spread over 4.5 kilometers and includes other technological mechanisms.

“We are constantly working to strengthen the security components on all borders, as we face existing and future challenges,” Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman said regarding the progress of the work. “The unique obstacle that we are currently constructing in the Arava is further proof of the creativity and capability of the defense establishment and this is the foundation of the IDF’s strength,” he said.

The construction of the barrier required, among other things, the clearing of old minefields over a distance of about 13 kilometers and is expected to be completed soon.

The Ministry of Defense emphasized that the barrier’s design took into account the unique terrain of the Arava region. The Defense Ministry coordinated with the various Environmental Protection authorities to minimize damage to the landscape. For example, they worked to develop a solution that would enable the construction of the barrier along the Arava Stream and protect animal crossings while strengthening the foundations of the barrier and protecting them from water erosion.
