The Committee for Eradicating Crime in Arab Society, chaired by MK Mansour Abbas on Tuesday discussed advancing legislation making it mandatory to install panic buttons on buses in the public transport system.

Abbas demanded a prompt response from the Ministry of Transportation and said the attacks on bus drivers occur in all sectors of society. He also said that Israeli Police must work to curb the phenomenon, adding that the way to deal with it is through “real deterrence, not just by ‘confining’ the bus driver behind a partition, as suggested by professional elements.”

Abba said that he plans to advance legislation that would obligate public bus companies to install panic buttons near the driver. Panic buttons, he said, will deter passengers from engaging in any violent conduct, be it physical or verbal, towards the drivers.
