  • Shin Bet Deputy Director is Minister Erdan’s new Police Chief candidate
  • Netanyahu, Rivlin meet after rift amid security situation
  • Veteran Israeli journalist Moti Kirschenbaum dies at 76

Following reports that Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan has proposed a new candidate for Police Chief, it was reported that the candidate is the current Deputy Director of the Israeli Security Agency (Shin Bet). Erdan is expected to transfer the candidate’s name and details to the Turkel committee for examination within the next few days. Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu approved the new candidate.

After two months of chilly relations, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with President Reuven Rivlin on Friday for a routine update meeting, in which they discussed the ongoing escalation in violence around Jerusalem. At the beginning of September, following a long rift over Israel’s deteriorating relationship with the United States, Rivlin revealed in a radio interview that he and Netanyahu had skipped two of their scheduled monthly meetings.

After weeks of escalating tensions in East Jerusalem between local Palestinians and Israeli security forces, Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon decided Thursday to raise the wages of police officers serving in the city by NIS 10,000 per year. The Finance Ministry said that the increase in payment was aimed at maintaining moral within a police force facing long hours of challenging work recently, and also at encouraging new recruits to join their ranks.

Veteran Israeli journalist Moti Kirschenbaum passed away Thursday night, just one day after celebrating his 76th birthday. Kirschenbaum was an iconic figure in Israeli television and one of its founders, having presented, produced, edited and directed countless programs for the past five decades.
