Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu summoned US Ambassador to Israel Daniel Shapiro following the US’ decision to abstain from the United Nations Security Council vote on the anti-Israel resolution. Netanyahu, publicly accused US President Barack Obama of “ambushing” Israel at the UN with the “shameful” resolution, Earlier, Netanyahu summoned all of the ambassadors whose countries are members of the UN Security Council that have diplomatic relations with Israel. Netanyahu also reiterated his vow to curtail funding to various UN agencies and to take “additional” measures to punish states that supported the resolution. He said he had ordered a report from the Foreign Ministry to be given to the cabinet within 30 days reassessing Israel’s entire relationship with the United Nations. Widening his punitive response to the United Nations Security Council’s anti-settlements resolution, Netanyahu will cancel a planned meeting next month with British Prime Minister Theresa May. Netanyahu told all ministers to have no contact with ministers from countries that voted yes on Friday’s Security Council resolution, and not to visit those countries.
Furthermore Netanyahu told Likud MKs that ack Obama may have another surprise in store, and therefore they shouldn’t speak openly about annexing parts of the West Bank.
The large fire that broke out Sunday at Haifa’s Oil Refinery complex is still raging on while the Refinery company continues to emphasize they were doing all they could to try and gain control of the flames. Although firefighters seemed to have gained control over the blaze earlier in the day, a short while later, the fire reignited. The police stated that at this time the fire does not seem to endanger nearby factories and that police units have been dispatched to the area to provide assistance. According to initial investigations, the fire broke out because of the presence of static electricity in the oil tanker during flush operations. In the last few hours, members of Ministry of Environmental Protection measured a low concentration of air particles which indicates that the pollution from the fires is not hazardous to the population. Since the fire is still burning, the Ministry has advised the population in the area at risk, such as those in the Krayot, to avoid being outdoors as much as possible as a precaution.
Knesset speaker Yuli Edelstein instructed Knesset Security Chief to allow the police to enter Arab MK Basel Ghattas’s office in order to search it. The only other MK to ever have his office searched was Ghattas’ cousin and Balad founder Azmi Bishara in 2007. Bishara fled the country while under investigation for giving information to Hezbollah during the Second Lebanon War. Meanwhile the Knesset’s legal advisor says that Ghattas, who is in jail facing criminal charges for bringing phones to Palestinian security prisoners, would not be able to vote in parliament.
