Following the same-sex adoption crisis in Israel, today (Wednesday), Israel’s Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit said that he supports adoption by gay couples. Mandelblit clarified that this is only his personal opinion and he said this during a closed meeting.

Although Mandelblit expressed his surprising support, this is an example of a case in which he has a personal position that contradicts the opinion of the government and the law. Of course, he is committed to the government’s position and above all to the law so his personal opinion is irrelevant.

The subject has caused drama over the past several months after the State stated that it opposes adoption by same-sex couples as it could add unwanted ‘baggage’ to the adopted child.

Only last week, a survey revealed that the vast majority of Israelis (74%) believe that the main factor of giving a child up for adoption should be what’s best for the child and not the type of family asking to adopt him. 60% believe that the law must be amended to allow gay couple to adopt. 63% replied that there is no connection between the type of family and the ability to give a child love and warmth, good education, security and more.
