The anti-settlement resolution drafted by Egypt was passed this evening by the UN Security Council with 14 votes in favor and an abstention by Washington. The vote on the resolution against Israel’s settlements in the West Bank was postponed yesterday at Israel’s request. Today, an Israeli official claimed that the US government planned the resolution behind Israel’s back. Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon said, “We call on the US to stand by us.”

US Ambassador to the UN Samantha Powers, by order of US President Barack Obama, abstained without vetoing the anti-settlement resolution passed by the UN Security Council moments ago. The vote took place a day after Egypt postponed the UN Security Council’s vote on its draft resolution regarding the Israeli settlements at the request of four countries. An Israeli official pointed fingers at the US saying “Obama and Kerry are behind this embarrassing action at the UN.”
The resolution was supposed to be brought up for a vote at the UN Security Council yesterday. However, hours before the vote, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi told the US Ambassador to the UN to “postpone the vote indefinitely.” A source told Reuters that Israel formally approached Egypt and asked them to postpone the vote. Although it was unclear how the US would vote on the resolution earlier in the night, moments ago, the resolution passed without a veto by the US Ambassador to the UN, a clear message from the Obama administration.

In light of the postponement, four UN Security Council member states, New Zealand, Venezuela, Malaysia and Senegal warned that they intend to demand that the Security Council vote on the issue even without the official Egyptian draft resolution.
“The US government quietly cooked up with the Palestinians this extremely anti-Israel resolution behind Israel’s back, which validates terrorism and boycotts of Israel,” said an Israeli official blaming the US. Another Israeli diplomatic official said this was an exercise of Obama’s policy against Israel. “Obama wants to force his policy on Trump before he can influence these countries,” said the official.
“Obama knows that the United States’ policy is going to change and he is trying to force a decision at the UN even though he knows it wouldn’t be the next administration’s policy,” he added. “This is an abandonment of Israel. Obama is breaking decades of a US policy to protect Israel at the UN.”

Israel’s Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon responded to the four countries’ plans to vote on the settlements in East Jerusalem and the West Bank. “This is an anti-Israeli resolution spearheaded by the Palestinians, the entire purpose of which is to hurt Israel,” he said. “We call on the US to stand by us and expect our greatest ally to stick to its long-standing position and to veto the decision.”
