The viral video of Palestinian girls attempting to provoke IDF soldiers has caused a split in the Israeli public. While some believe that the soldiers should have responded with force, others commended the soldiers.
The viral video of 16-year old Ahed Tamimi assaulting an IDF soldier has caused the Israeli public to debate whether the soldiers responded correctly. The IDF Spokesperson’s Unit stated that the soldiers acted professionally but had the right to arrest the girl.
“There is no situation in which it’s acceptable for my soldiers to get slapped,” stated former company commander Amit Deri. “It sends the soldiers and commanders a message that getting hit by protesters is a feasible scenario. The soldier’s weapon needed to be placed behind his back and the commander should have used both hands to stop her before she slapped him. Every commander has zip ties.”
“It ended in an arrest anyway,” Deri added in reference to Tamimi’s arrest during the night. “We got the same images of security forces taking a girl out of her house in the middle of the night- that’s how soldiers are supposed to act.”
Meanwhile, Peace Now Director and former company commander Avi Buskila stated that the soldiers acted appropriately by refraining to respond to the provocation. Buskila also criticized Minister Naftali Bennett, who claimed that the girls should be put in prison.
