Israeli State Attorney Shai Nitzan ordered an investigation against the country’s Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon, following the Channel 2 News report accusing him of widespread corruption. The report revealed that Danon used taxpayers’ money in order to strengthen his position within the Likud party by appointing friends and family to positions within national institutions.

Israeli State Attorney Shai Nitzan has ordered the Israel Police to open an investigation against Israel’s Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon (Likud), following the report aired by Channel 2 News accusing him of widespread political corruption. Last week, three demands landed on Israeli Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit’s table to begin a criminal investigation against Danon and his World Zionist Organization associate Yaakov Hagoel.
In response to Nitzan’s order, a statement was made on behalf of Ambassador Danon this evening: “All of Ambassador Danon’s activities in his public duties were always in compliance with all rules and procedures and of course, the investigation will also confirm this. At the same time, we hope that a similar investigation will also be conducted against the World Zionist Organization and KKL, which are headed by political representatives from several parties such as Meretz, the Zionist Union and other parties.”
As reported last week by JOL, members of the opposition called for Danon to return to Israel for questioning following the Channel 2 News report. Labor Party leader Avi Gabbay praised the report, saying that it exposes “another brick in the wall of corruption surrounding the Likud.” Meretz MKs Michal Rozin and Mossi Raz called on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “to order Danon to return to Israel immediately.”
