This evening (Wednesday), Gush Etzion will host Jubilee celebrations for West Bank settlements, the Golan Heights and the Jordan Valley. Israeli Supreme Court President Miriam Naor has decided against sending any representative of the court to the event.
The decision has caused drama among senior-level officials in the Ministry of Justice and even some ministers. An appeal was filed to the Supreme Court asking Justice Naor to explain the reason behind the decision but was rejected. According to the justices, Naor did explain herself by saying that the event is political.
“There is no disagreement regarding Naor’s argument, which claimed that the West Bank territories are a matter of deep public dispute,” The Supreme Court ruled. “The decision…is also necessary in order to maintain public trust in the judicial system.”
According to the justices, maintaining an independent judicial system and protecting the public’s trust in it are necessary to preserve the democratic character of Israel.
