Today (Wednesday), Israel’s Representative to the United Nations Danny Danon was chosen as the Vice President of the 72nd UN General Assembly. Danon was elected at the UN headquarters in New York as the representative of the Western European and Others Group (WEOG) and will begin his term with the UN General Assembly in September.
As part of his role, Danon will manage the meetings of the General Assembly and will take an active part in planning its schedule.
Last year, he was elected as the Chairman of the UN Legal Committee and became the first Israeli representative to head a permanent UN committee.
“I am proud to be the first Israeli elected to this position,” Danon said after the election. “Israel is a world leader in international law and in fighting terrorism. We are pleased to have the opportunity to share our knowledge with the countries of the world.”
