Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Knesset speaker Yuli Edelstein (Likud) are taking part in the ceremony that initiates the Yom Hazikaron events throughout Israel. The ceremony is taking place at the Yad LeBanim building in Jerusalem.
“A cloud of sadness surrounds the State of Israel today,” said Netanyahu during his speech. “[It] always [surrounds] the families, children, widows, girlfriends, brothers and sisters whose loved ones were killed during Israel’s wars while they were fulfilling their duty, during the conflicts that are between the wars and during the brutal terror attacks.”
“We are marking today the mutual commitment and shared fate that connects all of us to the bereaved families,” said Netanyahu. “All of us together bow our heads in memory of the fallen soldiers and the others who were killed at the hands of terrorist murderers. We are one nation.”
At 8:00 PM, the main ceremony will take place at the Western Wall. The ceremony will begin after a minute-long siren throughout Israel is sounded. Another siren will be sounded at 11:00 AM tomorrow.
