The American Jewish Committee (AJC), a pioneer organization in interfaith relations will be donating funds for the restoration of the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris that was ravaged by fire this past Monday.

AJC CEO David Harris said “Whether Catholic or not, Notre Dame Cathedral is an integral part of our shared legacy and soul. It represents centuries of French and European faith, culture, history and imagination.”

Jewish communities worldwide have expressed their solidarity with France and the thousands of Catholics that are mourning this terrible calamity. In Israel  President Reuven Rivlin and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu similarly expressed their support for France.

The Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu posted on Twitter on Monday “I express my deep sorrow over the fire at the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, a cultural and religious heritage site of France and of all humanity. We hope the firefighting efforts will succeed.”

President Reuven Rivlin said, “The Notre Dame Cathedral is among the most beautiful of Paris’s symbols and of France’s in general, but also one of the most important to any cultured person.”

“Last January, I looked out over the Parisian skyline, all the more beautified by the cathedral’s spire. Our hearts are with the citizens of France and the tales of Notre Dame, true and fictional, in prayer that they will endure forever,” Rivlin said

According to the AP agency, nearly one billion dollars has already been raised for the restoration project. Mega-corporations like Apple, Disney and L’Oréal have pledged to donate large sums of money for the project.
