After the government officials appointed to the Israeli Interior Committee hearing failed to show up, the meeting was canceled. The government’s plans to help the families who suffered from the fires have been set back with this hearing cancellation.

The Knesset’s Interior Committee hearing on the damage from last week’s fires was supposed to take place this morning. However, according to MK Dudu Amsalem, the hearing was canceled after those appointed by the government to handle the matter did not show up. “This is an audacity and disrespectful,” said Amsalem.

“People who lost their homes and all their belongings are here to get a little bit of hope and the government’s appointed officials don’t care,” added Amsalem. “On behalf of the State of Israel, I would like to apologize to the residents. Because these selfish appointees missed this hearing on the fire damage, I had to cancel it along with tomorrow’s Regulation Law hearing – let them chase after me now.”

Amsalem added: “Those residents, citizens of Israel, lost their whole world. These fires destroyed their homes, their families and their lives and these officials decided not to show up to the Interior Committee’s hearing. I am in shock.”

Last week, the Israeli government held a special meeting in Haifa following the fires. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said at the meeting that although the fires burned property, nobody lost their life. “Our message to every Israeli citizen whose homes and property were damaged in the fire: we will help you recover your homes and your lives,” Netanyahu said.

Israeli Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon announced last week that families who are unable to return to their homes will receive 2,500 NIS per person. This means that a family of four will receive 10,000 NIS in order to buy clothes, food and supplies for the coming period of time.
