Nine men were charged Wednesday with attempting to carry out terror attacks during the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification match between Israel and Albania in November 2016. According to the prosecutor’s office in Kosovo, the suspects were planning to harm the Israeli national team and its fans.
The match was moved to a different venue in light of the terror threat. Shortly after the news about the terror threat made headlines, the authorities in Kosovo arrested 19 suspects affiliated with ISIS on suspicion that they were planning attacks in the country and Albania.
Israel won the game against Albania in November. This was a major victory for the soccer team led by Eran Zahavi. However, the Israeli national team hosted Albania this week in Haifa for another World Cup qualifier and lost (3-0).
