Lebanon claims its Prime Minister, Saad Hariri, is being held in Saudi Arabia, a senior Lebanese government official told Reuters on Thursday, urging foreign countries to pressure the Saudi regime to release him.

The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the violation of Hariri’s freedom is a “direct attack on Lebanese sovereignty,” adding that the Lebanese government will “work closely with foreign countries to bring him back to Beirut.”

Despite Hariri’s surprise resignation announcement on Saturday, the official referred to him as the Prime Minister.

Hariri announced his resignation during a visit to Saudi Arabia, claiming he senses a plot to assassinate him.
