Today (Tuesday), Israeli Education Minister Naftali Bennett’s criticism of the IDF Spokesperson’s statement was met with disapproval by Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman.

“The briefing of the IDF Spokesperson must not serve as an excuse for a blatant assault on the IDF and its commanders,” Lieberman wrote on his Facebook page. “Such statements are a grave blow to the security of Israel and the entire IDF. We will continue to act with determination, force and responsibility for the security of Israeli citizens.”

Earlier, Bennett stated: “We are not looking for an escalation [in violence], and as a member of the [Security] Cabinet, who since Operation Protective Edge has been working towards neutralizing the tunnel threat, I completely endorse the operation. The IDF’s purpose is to defeat the enemy and this should be continued.”

As previously reported by JOL, the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit clarified that the terrorists died during an evacuation from the tunnel and not as a result of a direct strike. The unit also said that although the tunnel belonged to the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, the IDF holds Hamas responsible as Gaza’s governing body.
