During an interview with Israel Television News Company, Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman said that the IDF is working to destroy all of Hamas’s terror tunnels and that this task should be complete by the end of the year. “I imagine that we will have this done earlier but the task is that by the end of 2018, there will be not even one attack tunnel left,” he said.

Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman announced on Sunday evening during an interview with Israel Television News Company that all of the Palestinian terror tunnels will be destroyed by the end of 2018.
“Well done to the IDF soldiers and the Jewish brain that invented the ‘wonder dome’ [the technology for discovering tunnels],” Lieberman said. “What is important is that by the end of 2018, we will have eliminated all the attack tunnels that Hamas possesses. We will manage to destroy them- this is the mission. I imagine that we will have this done earlier but the task is that by the end of 2018, there will be not even one attack tunnel left.”
Lieberman’s interview took place after the Israeli security establishment reached the assessment that Hamas had planned to plant explosives in the tunnel that was destroyed on Saturday night, directly under the Kerem Shalom border crossing, and then detonate them. According to Lieberman, such an attack would have actually harmed the residents of Gaza. “This is a cynical leadership that wanted to harm the main oxygen pipeline that provides all or most of the assistance to the [Gaza] Strip,” he said. “This just shows with whom we are dealing on the other side.”
Also on Sunday evening, Commander of the Southern Brigade in the Gaza Division Col. Kobi Heler met with the residents of Kibbutz Kerem Shalom, which is located near the border crossing. During the meeting, he reassured them that both Hamas and the IDF are not interested in starting a war.
“No one wants an escalation [of violence] in the near future,” he said. “We responded to every rocket. Some of the responses were strong and in light of them, there was no retaliation on the Gazan side. This demonstrates our high level of deterrence.”
