Yesterday evening, several protests against the detention of a Haredi draft dodger took place throughout Israel. In response, Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman ordered this evening (Wednesday) that the draft deferment policy and budget granted to the yeshivot whose students participated in the protests be revoked. Lieberman was referring to two yeshivot headed by Haredi Rabbi Shmuel Auerbach.
Lieberman instructed MK Oded Forer to work with the relevant ministries in order to revoke the funding granted to these yeshivot. “The mere existence of these protests that defy the IDF draft and seek to undermine the authority of the state to draft [citizens] is unacceptable and we will not put up with these phenomena that also try to frighten those who really want to be drafted,” stated Lieberman.
