The French leader added that the EU would take ‘firm’ and ‘proportionate’ action against the move.

French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday told US President Donald Trump that his decision to impose tariffs on aluminum and steel from Europe is “illegal.”

Macron said Europe would respond in a “firm and proportionate manner” against the move, which he said will create “economic nationalism that will penalize everyone including the US.”

Trump has repeatedly argued that these tariffs are essential for protecting the US industry and save American jobs.

The EU has responded by threatening to impose retaliatory tariffs on US imports, including motorcycles, jeans and cigarettes. Jean-Claude Juncker, the president of the European Commission, tweeted that the US had left the EU with “no choice” but to proceed with a dispute settlement case via the World Trade Organization (WTO) and to impose tariffs on US goods.
