Following the powerful earthquake in the Solomon Islands, a tsunami alert was released in Papua New Guinea and other areas neighboring the islands in the Pacific.

Tonight (Thursday), a magnitude 7.7 earthquake has hit the Solomon Islands in the Pacific Ocean. Following the earthquake that occurred at a depth of approximately 50 kilometers (30 miles), a tsunami alert was released in Papua New Guinea and other areas neighboring the islands.

The US Geological Survey warned that dangerous tsunami waves could reach the shorelines of the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, Nauru, Tuvalu and Kosrae within the next hours. Authorities are examining the possibility of a tsunami warning in Hawaii.
