Today (Monday), it was publicized that the Mayor of Safed (Israel) Ilan Shohat is suspected of bribery and corruption. Shohat, who’s been the mayor of the city since 2008, was investigated by the Israel Police and the Tax Authorities who raided the town and detained 3 more suspects.

The 4 are suspected of bribery in real estate projects and other ventures and activities involving the Safed Municipality. The full extent of the bribery is suspected of reaching hundreds of thousands of shekels, even hinting that the mayor paid for his house with the money.

Meanwhile, Israel’s State Attorney will file a case against Ashkelon mayor Itamar Shimoni for bribery and breach of trust. The decision was reached after he wasn’t convinced with Shimoni’s arguments during a hearing.
