On Friday, Hezbollah’s Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah stated that the incident from last week in which an Israeli aircraft was shot down in Syria was a “great military success.” Tensions between Israel and Syria rapidly increased on Saturday after an Iranian drone that had infiltrated Israeli airspace was shot down by the Israeli Air Force. In retaliation, Israel fighter jets targeted Syrian and Iranian military positions in Syria. One of the jets was hit by Syrian anti-aircraft fire and went down in Israeli territory.

Nasrallah also urged the Lebanese leadership to not be persuaded by the US’ suggestions regarding Lebanon’s disputed maritime border with Israel. Yesterday, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson met with Lebanese officials to discuss the border issue. The Lebanese officials reportedly rejected the suggestions made by the top American official, calling them unacceptable.

“The dispute over the border is a battle for Lebanon,” Nasrallah stated, insinuating that the US’ suggestions should be ignored.

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres at the Munich Security Conference. Netanyahu addressed the Iranian threat and the growing Iranian presence in Syria.
