Following the dramatic resignation of Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu began a round of talks with coalition leaders and Likud leaders to try and stabilize the government.

At the same time, the Jewish Home political party (Bayit Hayehudi) voted unanimously to demand that the government of Benjamin Netanyahu minister Naftali Bennett be the next head of the Ministry of Defense of Israel. They warned this If the Habait Haiehudi party does not receive this ministry, the legislators of the faction will ask to call general elections.

During the press conference, in which he announced his resignation, Lieberman said: “I am here to announce my resignation from the post of Minister of Defense, and the question is why now?

As far as I am concerned, what happened yesterday, the ceasefire combined with the agreement with Hamas, is a capitulation to terrorism. We are paying for short-term peace of mind in exchange for serious long-term damage to national security.”

“There is no reason for those terrorist leaders in the Gaza Strip to feel comfortable. They walk freely, attend demonstrations in front of the border fence and incite violence against the State of Israel. Their budget of $270 million a year continues to be invested in strengthening terror, and that is unacceptable” he said.

Deputy Bezalel Somotrich (Habait Haiehudi) remarked after hearing about Lieberman’s resignation: “I don’t think there is anyone in Israel who regrets this resignation. Liberman was a failed defense minister, mainly because he is not a leader. He failed to steer the Defense establishment towards bold, creative and innovative thinking and to present creative solutions to a complex reality.
