On Thursday, the IDF revealed the new training program for its elite unit Sayeret Matkal. The main changes are that all soldiers in the elite unit will become officers and begin their academic studies during the army.

As part of the new program, the soldiers’ basic training will be shortened from 20 months to 16 months. This change will give the soldiers more time in the field before they are released. According to the new program, all of the soldiers in the unit will become officers. After becoming officers, they will sign on for an extra 3 years in the army. During their last year of service, they will be able to start their university studies, which they will finish after they are released.

According to a senior IDF officer familiar with the new program, the changes are supposed to improve the soldiers’ operational capabilities. “At the basis of this change is the need for maturity and operational experience,” he explained.
